How to Protect Yourself When You’re Not Allowed to Have a Weapon

Protect Yourself Not Allowed WeaponWhen I see and hear about terrorist attacks, in particular, in countries where people are not allowed to have any weapons, it makes me angry. Protecting yourself, protecting your family and your home — isn’t that a God-given right? If a government takes away your right to protect your own body, then what other rights, really, do you have? How do you protect yourself when the law denies you the right to have a weapon of any kind?

We have friends in Europe and I’ve wondered how they might possibly defend themselves in a terrorist attack. One fellow in England worries about sharps — knives, machetes, even swords, as attack weapons.…

Why You Must Take Advanced Shooting Classes

Advanced Shooting Classes I didn’t grow up with guns in the house because my family didn’t live in the continental United States. Due to my Dad’s job, we were all over the globe and living in places that didn’t exactly have Second Amendment rights. However, during my high school years, two of my older buddies were finally of age and could legally go through the process to purchase firearms. We started target shooting. Not advanced shooting classes, but just shooting for fun.

Living near the ocean, we would sometimes go out to remote places where we could shoot into the water. We’d throw empty gallon milk jugs into the water and then do our best to shoot at them while they were bobbing on the waves.…

What to Do In an Active Sniper Shooting Like Dallas

sniperLast month I wrote two posts, Some Thoughts on What to Do in an Active Shooting situation, and 16 Things You Need to Know When Caught in a Panicky Crowd or Riot.  This morning after watching the news on the 11 police officers that were shot in Dallas by a sniper, I reviewed these posts.  I wanted to see if the information that I published would have helped anyone.  But first I want to express my condolences to the families and friends of the officers who were killed.  My prayers are with the wounded officers so that they will make a quick recovery.…

What to Do In An Active Shooting Situation

active shootingThe shooting that occurred in Orlando, Florida, has been on my mind ever since I heard about it yesterday. It clarified some thoughts that have been going through my mind for some time now. First, let me express my condolences to the families of the victims, I feel for them.

Now, what I have to say next may make some people upset with me, but these are the thoughts that have been going through my mind. First, the government programs teach that if you are caught in an active shooter situation you should run, hide, or fight in that order. I personally have some reservations about this.…

16 Things You Need to Know When Caught in a Panicky Crowd or Riot

panic crowd riot What happens if you are stuck in a large riotous crowd?  Now this can be the result of an evacuation or bug out situation, a protest, food riot or any other mob-ruled violence.

Now, back in the early 70s, I was working undercover and got caught in a couple of the anti-war riots that occurred during this period. Once, I even ended up on the wrong side of a police line, not the right place to be.

Last night I was watching a movie and they showed the people traveling in a large, panicky crowd. Our heroes made several dumb moves.…

guard animals

a small terrier can make a good watchdog to warn you of intruders

Now when you go to choose  guard animals, the first and most important thing that you have to decide is what do you want the animals to do.  If you live in an apartment or house in an urban area your needs will be entirely different that someone who lives in the country and raises animals.

If you live in an apartment you may want a small dog that will give you early warning of a threat.  A good example would be one of the smaller terriers. They can be trained and are fairly alert. …

The problems of Carrying Weapons in Purses or Other Bags

carrying weaponsMy wife and I have had this talk on several occasions, about different ways of carrying weapons.  She has a tendency to default to her purse.  One principle always applies whether you are talking about a firearm, pepper spray, knife or a club.  The weapon is only useful if you can get it into operation quickly when attacked.

The other day I read about a female police officer who had her purse snatched.  She lost her firearm, because the mugger ran up behind her and grabbed her purse.  She had no time to react and lost her firearm and got into trouble at work. …

Protecting Children During TEOTWAWKI or Other Emergencies

protecting childrenIf you are a parent or grandparent you always worry about protecting children from harm during any life threatening emergencies. Now when I mention harm I am including psychological damage that can be caused by us creating an atmosphere of fear.  We don’t want to stress our children out.

After giving this some thought and research I have came up with the following steps for protecting children

1 – Don’t scare them.  Don’t start with camo face paint, smoke bombs and talk about killing people or violence.

2 – Make them feel safe.  Here is the story of one young child who was raised in hurricane country and was faced with the threat of storms on several occasions. …

Is Archery a Good Skill for Good for Preppers?

archery

The English longbow in use

The other night I was watching an old movie on television and they were showing archery with the English longbow.  Now I am a history buff, and have read extensively about the use of the longbow during the hundred year war between England and France. This got me to thinking about the use of archery in prepping.

Now I am not a good archer and will never be, because it takes considerable training and strength and I am too old..  During the 14th and 15th centuries, English archers were expected to shoot ten “aimed” shots per minute during battle.…
