How to Cook Strange Foods

Today I am going to discuss some information that is taught by the U.S Military about how to cook wildlife in emergency situations.  Most of us have a pretty good idea on how to cook deer, elk and other common game.  But what about the unusual animals you may have to eat when food is short.

Scavenger birds like crows, vultures and buzzards should be boiled for at least twenty minutes to kill the parasites, before cooking.  Save the feathers of all birds, they can be used for insulation.

When cleaning game save the blood, boil it thoroughly.  It is a good source of food and salt.…

What to do About Rats and Mice

In a long term emergency depending on where you live, rats and mice may quickly become a problem. Rats and mice reproduce quickly so you can’t ignore this problem. I suspect you will have more problems in the city or urban areas than in the country. Rats and mice spread disease, destroy food and cause other types of damage. Rats can chew through plastic buckets and even some metal containers.

Now, if you have a rat problem there are two ways to look at them, are they just a pest or a source of food?  If they are a potential source of food, you have to be careful about poisoning them.…

Avoiding Hantavirus

Some friends of mine recently had some problems with rats getting into some food they had stored in Mylar bags inside cardboard boxes.  They lost a portion of their storage and had a mess to clean up.  With the recent deaths in Yosemite from the hantavirus, this is a bit scary.

In a grid down situation rats and mice could become much more of a problem.  Now they don’t all carry hantavirus, but you only need to encounter the wrong one.  So I have gleaned some information of various government websites about how to avoid it.
