Sewing Supplies, You Need at Least a Minimum Kit

sewing supplies

Well folks our grandson is getting married in a few weeks, so of course we are having the round of bridal showers for his fiancé.  I thought this would be a good time to fill a new sewing box I had picked up.  I couldn’t tell if she was kidding or not but she looked at it and said, ”what is this for.”  Everyone laughed, but how many girls out there don’t know how to sew or what sewing supplies they need..

Over the years, I have had many friends ask me to fix their clothes for them.  Sewing was taught in school when I went to school.  The schools don’t teach any domestic skills to the girls any more.  Sewing, cooking, darning socks, mending clothes, it’s all a lost art.

If you have children, they should know the few things that would get them by, instead of always paying someone to do it.  Even the boys and I know a few that can sew and it has come in handy for them.  I know it’s easier to go out and have someone else do it, but there will come a day in which you may not have that option.

I fixed a sewing basket for her to help her get started.  Every family should have these items as a minimum in their preps,

This is a list of the sewing supplies I got together for her.

  • Thread all colors, lots of it
  • Needles of all sizes, they are very inexpensive and would be hard to get after an emergency
  • Darning needle for socks and a light bulb or a wooden darning egg
  • Thimble, this is very important to protect your fingers especially using heavy materials
  • Sewing machine needles
  • Bobbins for machine
  • Seam ripper
  • Elastic, all widths
  • Iron on tape for hems (Temporary)
  • Straight pins, a good selection of all sizes
  • Iron on patches
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors, both regular and pinking shears
  • Tracing paper and tracing wheel, for use with patterns
  • You should consider finding basis patterns in the sizes to fit your family.
  • A sewing book “How to get started” is very important.
  • A bag of buttons different sizes and colors
  • Material, I didn’t give her any material, but you should have stock of heavy and light weight materials

These sewing supplies should be handy in all households especially in any emergency.  Of course, I also have a treadle sewing machine for when no electric is available.  These machines can be found pretty reasonably.  I have seen them in antique stores for $70.00 of course they might need a few belts but you can get them on the internet, they have a lot of parts for old machines, on the internet.

If you can’t buy food, you probably won’t be able to buy clothes.  If you don’t know how to sew, it is time to learn, you might want to find a mentor or class.

  1. Craigslist in the summer is a great time to find treadle sewing machines. If you live in the city, you can also find them on Craigslist in the winter, but in the woods they seem to be more available in the summer (I guess people get in the garage-sale mood).

You can sometimes find sewing supplies at thrift stores. Old patterns that are no longer made, which can be a life-saver since a lot of the older patterns were designed better; cuts of fabric or even full bolts; and miscellaneous stuff like sharpening tomatoes, etc. Just remember, while fabric holds up real well through the years, thread does not. Never buy thread at a thrift store because it will keep snapping on you if you try and use it.

  2. Another item I would highly recommend is a Speedy Stitcher sewing awl, https://www.sew4home.com/tips-resources/sewing-tips-tricks/how-use-speedy-stitcher-sewing-awl which produces by hand as good a lock-stitch as you can go on a larger machine. This is absolutely necessary for making permanent repairs of web gear, packs, tents, sails, leather goods and horse tack. Get the original and not the Chinese copy. West Marine, Cabelas, Gemplers, Walmart and Garrett-Wade all carry them. PRACTICE with it and develop confidence in its use.

A large spool of military surplus waxed linen or nylon shoe thread and an assortment of extra needles are worth their weight in gold when needed. A YouTube video of the Speedy Stitcher if you are unfamiliar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNFMzAEW0V0

  3. SHOE GOO – $5.95 AMAZON is handy for quickie or emergency repairs of fabric, shoe soles, and tents. my sewing kit contains several safety pins from I/2″ to 3″. they weigh little and take up no space. they are also useful for emergency fish hooks and digging splinters and thorns out of the body. sail needles, cord to fit sail needles and dental floss for sewing should be considered. the safety pins are kept on my first aid kit. thread, cord and dental floss can be used for fishing line and safety pins for sinkers.

  4. Elastic degrades over time, shoe strings do not degrade and can replace elastic. For example if you need to make boxer shorts.

Clothes that are 100% cotton and can no longer be repaired can be turned into other items. For example a shirt can be turned into washable face masks.

  5. Not just for girls, it should be taught to boys as well. I’m still in my 20’s (late 20’s, lol) I learned to sew from my mom when I was only 5. Extremely useful skill. I would be lost without it. Sewing is pretty commonsensical, really. It’s not hard.
