Using the New MealSaver for Vacuum Sealing Mason Jars

My wife collects FoodSavers. Not really, she only has three of them and she uses them all the time.  She vacuums seals all kinds of foods and spices in mason jars.

This is the second video she has made on them.  It shows a smaller less expensive version of the FoodSaver that is designed to seal jars and some plastic bags called a Mealsaver.  My wife likes it for sealing jars, because it takes less room on her counter.  The following is a video she made showing how to use it and a trick she learned for sealing fine powders like spices.

  1. I really appreciate the way your website offers such great ideas for us preppers. This looks just like what I’ve been looking for!!! I don’t have a big Foodsaver because of space issues. I do have a couple of questions. I noticed that you just put the device on top of the jar sealer. Do I just need to buy the jar sealers (and not the tube attachment)?
Which model did you demonstrate? I saw several different numbers on Amazon which was confusing. Thanks for your help.

  2. Hi Barbara, The type is VS400 Meal Saver Model # fsmssy0200-000 Bag sealer . This was on the bottom of the sealer. The front has Food Saver Meal Saver. I got mine at Sierra trading. Its now listed for 31.95 and they are sold out. I know that Amazon had it also. With this machine you only need the sealers NOT the tubing, you are right. I love to seal everything I can. Thanks for your question as always we’re here to help.

  3. Thank you for the information – I’ve ordered one. I’m new at dehydrating also and have a quick question. Is it beneficial to drop a food grade dessicant pak into a jar of home dehydrated food before vacuum sealing it so that there’s less chance for spoilage? I’ve saved some from my vitamin bottles.

  4. Thanks for the video! I’ve been trying and trying all afternoon to seal mason jars – is there a trick to getting a good seal between the green handheld thing and the jar attachment?

  5. Thank you showing us how to use the jar sealer. My husband and I just bought a mealsaver vacuum and a jar sealer. We could not figure out how to seal jars with the mealsaver. We thought that we may need to get a hose attachment. By watching your video I now understand how to use the jar sealer. Thank you so much we can’t wait to start using our jar sealer.

  6. I just upgraded to a Foodsaver w/ accessory attachment and loved your idea for using the cupcake liners. I’d been contemplating this, as I want to seal up some flour and such. I did some powdered sugar and had it everywhere. The regular mouth jar attachment sure doesn’t work as well as the widemouth one. I pull the gasket out of it when removing the attachment about three out of every four times it seems.

  7. A friend gave me her vs400 foodsaver base without any instructions, caps or attachments. Please tell me you know where to buy attachments and locate a manual. Appreciate your time.

Go to the foodsaver.com and type Foodsaver Mealsaver in the search box at the top of the page. That will take you to a download page for both a quick start pamphlet and a user guide. This unit is no longer made but you can find all the accessories for it on eBay and other retail sites, just use Google.

  8. This has saved us al ot of money! I love the fact we can store food, soups etc and it lasts months now without spoiling.

      Rachele,
Without knowing what your exact problem is, I’ll share my experience as I had trouble using mine at first. Have you purchased the wide mouth and regular mouth white plastic jar sealers? They’re around $10 each on Amazon. They can only be used with real mason jars and lids. You know the jar is being sealed when the sound starts to transition to a higher pitch. It’s loud enough that I use earplugs when I seal jars. The jar rims and seals have to be perfectly clean in order for the seal to form. I wipe mine with a damp paper towel.

The wide mouth one works great. The regular mouth one has a design flaw that makes it difficult to seal the jar. If that’s the issue, I found a solution on another blog. Punch a hole in the center of a regular lid to use along with the white jar sealer. Place it upside down over the lid you are sealing, place the jar sealer over both, and turn the machine on. I find I need to kind of gently slide the green sealer around on the white jar sealer to get the vacuum going. Hope that helps. I think it’s a great little sealer and I like that it doesn’t take up a lot of counter space.

Oops – forgot to say that the lid with the whole doesn’t stay on the jar. Just keep it with the white jar sealer and use it over & over.

  11. The vacuum sealer makes a weird noise as it sucks the air out of the jar. The closer the sealer gets to creating a vacuum in the jar the higher pitch the noise becomes. The vacuum sealer will automatically stop when a vacuum has been created in the jar.
