So You Want to Keep Your Preps Secret

preps secret

Many of us store preps for all kinds of different reasons, they can vary from religious to political.  But for most of us if we store preps we don’t want it advertised.  So how do you keep your preps secret. This is alway a big challenge.

Here are 12 suggestions on way to keep your preps secret.

  1. First keep your mouth shut, during my career in law enforcement; the majority of my cases were made because somebody talked to someone they trusted. I have seen brother turn on brother and parents on children.  Be very careful whom you trust.  The less people the better.
  2. Live in a cash world when it comes to prepping. Credit cards and checks can be traced.
  3. Remember that anything you order over the internet can be traced. Almost every company I know keeps a list of their customers and what they have ordered.  Who knows where this list will end up.
  4. Don’t get preps through the mail. The post office has been known to record the shipping and return addresses for law enforcement.
  5. Keep your preps out of sight. A friend of mine who is a handyman often sees signs of preps and storage when working on houses.  Find good hiding place and think before you let maintenance people into your home.
  6. Stay off internet prepping sites, including mine. You leave a record everywhere you go.
  7. If it is legal in your state, avoid registering weapons.
  8. Be careful where you get rid of your trash. Packaging from preps needs to thrown away without attracting attention.  Many people give away a lot to their neighbors when they put out their trash.
  9. Buy in small quantity, through local big box stores, pay cash and avoid attention.
  10. Watch what you say on the telephone. Remember the NSA is watching you.
  11. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Store or hide your preps in different locations.
  12. If you have already started to prep and have made some of these mistakes, spread the word that you were a fool and have changed your mind and have gotten rid of the junk.

This is what you need to do if you are trying to keep your preps secret from the government.  Hiding them from your neighbors is easier, just keep your mouth shut and keep your preps hidden.  Particularly be careful when you are bringing them home if you have large amounts.  Before someone says well what about you, when I made the decision to help others I knew that I would be exposed to the public to some degree.  But this was my decision.

  1. Your homeowners insurance may require a termite inspection by a state licensed bug guy. This means he needs to look in every room, including closets. Mostly he looks at the ceilings with a flashlight. FYI.

  2. Hello Everyone!
I used a freezer, a large old freezer that someone no longer used.
Hired someone to lug it in, and never plugged it in.
In that freezer was all my prepper stuff – dried goods, packaged things, medicines, and a prepared backpack.
Termite/insurance inspectors have come through the house, but no one asks to see in the freezer. If I think they might do so (ask), I put some things on the top most layer, plug it in in advance just in case.
Human nature, no one asks to see inside your freezer unless they are the police I guess. Besides if they ask then, you are in trouble!
Hope this helps…it really hides stuff – that freezer.
And when family comes by, then I pile a bunch of stuff on top that is real heavy to haul off, and I can hear the guests messing with the boxes on top of it before they get down to the freezer door.

    1. Veteran Who Is Preparing

When the US Army trained for deployments to Iraq during building/home search training checking freezers was emphasized. Not everyone forgot the original Red Dawn movie. So those going through the training were told to check freezers and open the packages to see what is really inside.

  3. I really appreciate your sharing knowledge with folks like myself that are somewhat clueless. I’ve read and studied many of your articles. I’m 57 yr old female with a wheelchair bound husband. We have a place to bug out to. No I’m not telling anyone even my hubby where we’re going.). I can do some pretty heavy manual labor, but I’m not a man. I’ve been studying animal care and raising a variety of plants/food
for bartering in case. I’m a nurse so I already have some background in that. I’ve also studied essential oil and plant use, especially with wounds and infection. I’m hoping with skills and knowledge we will make it. Does this seem a wise plan to you?

  4. First a quick comment on using freezers for hiding8 preps. We have some friends who live out of state but have a retreat in our area. There house here was broken into several times and it seemed no matter how well he hid things the thieves would just take their time and find them. He bought a very old large chest freezer that was very rusty and put it on the front porch. First thing you saw when you walked up on the porch was the old freezer sitting off to the far corner against the wall of the house. He put a cheap hasp and padlock on the lid then put his guns and other stuff inside. His house has been broken into and vandalized but no one ever opens the old freezer.
Also if your considering putting your supplies in a self storage unit, forget it unless you use one with on site security.
in our area which is very rural every single storage unit in this area was broken into and looted over a 6-8 month period. For some reason the police
were powerless to either stop or catch the theives.
Some locals said the police were involved in the thefts. Anyway we heard of guns, four wheelers, saddles, furniture and all kinds of things stolen out of the storage units.
