5 Pieces of Overrated Prepper Advice

I’m a skeptic of just about everything. My wife will tell you I was born disgruntled and contrary, so when I hear certain pieces of prepper advice, again and again, I can’t help but question it. In no particular order, here are 5 pieces of overrated prepper advice that drive me crazy.

  1. Stock up on lots and lots of wheat. Okay, we did that and then realized that our family eats very little bread and we feel a lot healthier on lower-carb diets. My wife buys one loaf of Ezekiel bread (tastes like sandpaper to me, but she likes it), keeps it in the freezer, and it lasts for 3-4 weeks.

America’s Power Grid: Vulnerable or Not?

The current threat posed by North Korea can be debated back and forth, but one thing we know for certain is that the country’s dictator, Kim Jong-Un, has weapons capable of of an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack. This thought is terrifying and we citizens have no way of knowing how far those capabilities go and whether or not we might live in a targeted area.

Not very comforting, and I tend toward paranoia in the best of times. A war here on American soil is a terrifying thought.

Dictators are more interested in self-preservation than anything else, and, perhaps, that’s the one thought that gives me a bit of comfort.…

Are Your Local First Responders Ready for an EMP?

first responders ready for empOn April 21, 2016, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee discussed an issue that many states and local governments aren’t addressing: The possibility of a widespread grid power outages that would cause people to be out of electricity for long amounts of time.

According to an article in SC Magazine, the chairman of the committee, Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Penn.), told members that they need to start helping states and local governments prepare for such an event. During the same meeting, Craig Fugate, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said his agency was working with the Department of Energy to develop federal plans to respond to long-term power outages.…

Siphoning Gasoline from Newer Vehicles without Damaging Them

Siphoning Gasoline From Newer Vehicles Without Damaging Them via Preparedness Advice

The other day I received this e-mail on siphoning gas from cars:

“While doing some maintenance work on my gasoline powered electrical generator, the thought struck me that back in the old days, and in case of an emergency, one could always siphon gasoline out of their car’s gasoline tank and use it to run things like generators. However, that seems to be not the case nowadays. I tried inserting a conventional siphon hose into my tank but it “bottomed-out” on some obstruction before it touched any gasoline. I looked under the hood of my car (2001 Toyota Highlander) for a place where I could tie into my fuel line.

10 Last Minute Things to Do Before TEOTWAWKI

Last Minute TEOTWAWKI (1)If you are watching the news and following events you know that the country could be in major crisis with very little notice. The average citizen in Venezuela had little time to prepare for the collapse of their economy, and the author of this book lived through Argentina’s multiple collapses and can give you tips for preparing and surviving.

An economic collapse, an EMP, war — these worst case scenarios are part of the reason we all prep, so that we can handle the unexpected. But suppose you have a few hours notice? What are the 10 last minute things that are most important?…

EMP & CME Are Serious Threats

emp cme threatsThis morning I found an interesting article in today’s news that I feel we should pay attention to in planning our prepping.  US intel intercepts memo showing Iran wants to attack grid with EMP weapon… So today I decided to address the subject of EMP and CME. It has been some time since we posted any information on this subject.

As of yet I have not seen the government take an concrete action to mitigate the effects of and EMP attack or a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) event. UPDATE: The 2016 Republican platform mentions EMP as a major threat.

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP), also sometimes called a transient electromagnetic disturbance, is a short burst of electromagnetic energy.…

EMP and the US Militaries Return to Celestial Navigation

EMPNow I don’t claim to have any special knowledge on what is going to happen in the future.  I will be like the rest of you and just have to wait and see how it unfolds.  However, we can all form conclusions and make plans based on the information that we have access too.  Every day we are bombarded with tons of information, a lot of which is misinformation.  Because of the large volume it is easy to miss articles that may affect us  For instance, just yesterday I saw a news article that got me to wondering  US navy returns to celestial navigation amid fears of computer hacking.…

Your Gun Safe and the Hazards of Electronic Locks and EMP

electronis locksI was recently asked a question about the electronic locks that we see on so many new safes.  The question was will EMP destroy the electronic locks on your safes.  Electronic locking mechanisms are a real convenient, but at the same time they make me nervous because they need a power source.  If the power source fails, you’re stuck, unless your safe has a physical key that will override the electronic lock.  Not all safes with electronic locks have them.

The first question of course is, will EMP fry my lock.  Because of the locks small size and the fact that it is partly surrounded by metal, it is possible that the lock may survive intact. …

The Best Trash Container I have Seen for EMP Protection

EMP (Electromagnetic pulse) is a subject I am always trying to find out more about.  Now I am not going to become an expert in electronics, but I want to know enough to protect my electronic devices.  Now I do not think that I can protect my whole home or even large devices like my refrigerator.  They are on their own and will survive or not.  However, there are many smaller items that I want to survive.

Now I know that there are some differences in the type of pulse that is given off by CMP (coronal magnetic pulse) and EMP. …
