One thing that I have not seen much written on is vehicle maintenance for preppers. This is a subject that I have been thinking about for some time. My conclusion is that a large majority of us do not have the ability and will not be able to do any significant repairs to newer vehicles other than routine vehicle maintenance, for example oil changes.
Myself, I am lost with anything much newer that a 1953 Chevy. I am convinced that every serious preppers needs an older vehicle that they can feel conformable working on. I think that your level of mechanical knowledge is the deciding factor in what type of vehicle you need to own.
The vehicle should be one that would not be susceptible to damage from EMP and can be maintained with basic tools. This means that it should not have electronic fuel or ignition systems. A second reason for avoiding electronics is that many modern vehicles have as many as a 100 microprocessors that control virtually all the vehicle functions. Without expensive electrically powered test equipment, it is almost impossible to diagnose many problems.

Any vehicle you plan to use after TEOTWAWKI should also be a common enough make that you would have the chance to find parts in an emergency. If you are a trader and do a bit of scrounging with older vehicles there is a good chance you can accumulate extra parts like ignition coils, mechanical distributors, generators and starting motors before hand.
