Glass Jars and Earthquakes

A simple piece of one by four secured to the front of your shelves will help keep your jars in place during a earthquake.

The other day I watched Doomsday Preppers, in this episode they showed someone who was concerned about earthquakes.  When they showed his storage area, there were many glass jars sitting on shelves that were unprotected.  In an earthquake, these would all have fallen to the ground.

I live in earthquake country and also store some foods in glass jars.  To protect mine I do one of two things.  I store mason jars in their original boxes and place them in areas where they are not likely to fall.  Shelves on which glass jars are stored have a piece of one by four secured to the front edge of the shelves.

This provides a degree of protection to the preps.  If you consider earthquakes a problem, remember to keep heavy items low to the ground, store as much as you can in less breakable containers, and protect the breakable items.

  1. Yep preppers who are supposedly prepping for earthquakes and polar shifts which will have earthquakes with glass jars all over the place and 2 story buildings with no insulation even though they think Texas will be the new canada and 4 mths of dehy food with no water etc etc etc I cant watch it it anymore because it’s causing my BP to rise. Nat Geo went out of there way to show newbies, fringers, idiots and skill lackers who do not understand OPSEC and want 5mins of fame and can’t teach much of anything because even though they “prep” they do not actually do as is apparent by gear falling off of packs on the first hike in which the time was missed by hours when things are good and fingers blown off from safety violations 10 year olds learn with BB guns. I’ve seen 2 that I could be near and they showed basically nothing useful that they are doing that could actually help someone.
    Good tip, rant over

I don’t NGEO as my cable package is worthless.
I know that some of the things on it will drive a real prepper to distraction. But lets take it for what it is worth. Entertainment.
I do believe it will cause these people problems down the road if indeed their lifestyle is in the prepping mode for real. Their OPSEC is minimal to say the least.
And remember things happen even to seasoned preppers, BOB’r’s, hunters, hikers and in your home.
Critique the program with an attitude that you are glad you don’t know or live near them and that you know more than they do.

  2. Matt,
I agree with you. Thanks to the link you provided I watched a few of the prepper shows and was shocked at a lack of understanding of the gestalt. Someone who stores gallons of liquor for barter but doesn’t do the same with water,a fireman who thinks he will be able to run back and forth in SHTF scenario in NYC to retrieve MREs from a location 4 blocks away, I guess the message here from Nat Geo is that preppers are all idiots. Look, I am probably new to alot of this but as an ex combat nurse and mother of a marine who wouldn’t deploy until he made me learn to shoot a lot better, clean, and take apart several different types of appropriate weaponry, I watch these shows and feel like I am better prepared just because my critical thinking skills are sharper than what’s being portrayed on tv. Definitely take care of that blood pressure, meds are the first things to run out when there is no more being supplied! Thx for your interesting input. Laurie

    1. LOL thanks Laurie, aint on meds, keeping it in check by not watching crazy stuff though LOL
Glad to hear you are gaining skills as well as preparing. Wish had a combat nurse near us like yourself. Ole Plt Sgts make lousy group Drs LOl “just rub some dirt on it and get back in there” naw seriously i’m having to work OT to learn more cause it seems I have the best training of our small group so far.

  3. Yeah we have to be alert to all sorts of things when it comes to our stored foods. Bugs, rusty or bloated cans and breaking glass.
Nothing is for sure. But we have to be diligent in taking care of all of it.

  4. I use that shelf liner that you can get at the Dollar stores that is made of rubber and soft. I put it between the jars or sometimes I just wrap the glass jars with it with a rubber band. To me, though, the number one thing is a good water filter and/or a source of clean water.
